Carol asks…

Do I need to cover my teak garden furniture when not being used?

Martin Boyle answers:

Yes, as they tend to gather dust (as everything outside) and dirt and spiders and snails. During winter i cover (it does not snow even where i live)everything that cannot be taken inside or into a shed. Plus i put biological insect detergents onto/into the furniture.
During Summer i cover everything too because of the dust. Pillows and such must be taken inside every night.

Thomas asks…

Garden Furniture?

We have a lovely wooden table and chairs but would they spoil if i left them out permanently for the summer? Theyre treated with something – ie they came like that. We hardly ever use them cos its a pain getting them in and out of the shed, but if i felt safe to leave them out we’d use them more! Its been so wet lately ..

Martin Boyle answers:

I have wooden furniture out in my garden year long. If they are sealed with a non-yellowing polyurethane, you will need to add extra coats every other year or so to continue protection. Also, I purchased covers for my furniture that keeps the leaves off of them and adds protection during our rainy season. I have the ones with vinyl on the top but fabric underneath against the furniture. The ones that are only made of vinyl can trap moisture between the cover and wood which causes mold or mildew.

Daniel asks…

How do you get rid of mold spots on wood garden furniture?

I have a brand new garden furniture set bought this year and not used due to the weather! I covered it and yet now I see there is mold all over it and when I wiped it down there is marks and spots stained where the mold was… How can I get rid of or cover this?

Martin Boyle answers:

Tsp works good for mold and unlike bleach will not harm the wood or raise the grain too much.
